몇백년 두터운 가문에 짓눌리기보단 어딘가의 하늘로 달아나고 싶었다는 한 마디를 흘리던 서툰 소년은 이제 없다. 그럼에도 용맹과 올곧음으로 그 이름이 드높은 측근을 뒤로 물리고 당연스레 주조종석에 앉는 남자였다. 단추를 누르고 레버를 올리는 남자의 움직임을 따라 모래와 먼지들이 투명한 길을 만든다. 이 곳의 빛은 모래가, 스파이스가 있기에 간신히 아름답다.

"도련님은 제 죽음을 봤다고 하더군요, 공작님."

턱을 굳힌 남자는 옆을 돌아보지 않는다. 우묵하니 파인 볼 사이로 묻어있는 모래 알갱이를 털어내는 상상을 한다. 저도 모르게 내밀어졌던 손바닥이 거두어졌다. 이 곳은 칼라단이 아니다. 믿을 수 없을 만큼 아름답고 그만큼 알 수 없는 아내는 공작에게 찬란한 아들을 선물했고 이제 어린 공작의 나이가 된 아들은 누구도 걸어본 적 없는 거대한 길을 준비하고 있었다. 그리고 그 길에는 어쩌면 나도, 당신도 없을 것이다. 단언에 가까운 명제를 삼킨다.

문장은 형태가 되어 입밖으로 나오지 않는다. 조종간을 잡은 남자는 자신의 호위를 기다리지 않았다. 두개의 달이 비추기 시작한 사구를 향해 오니솝터는 그 거대한 소음으로 출발을 알린다. 천천히 눈을 감는다. 빛은 열을 동반한다. 채 가시지 않는 저녁의 빛에 남자와 동행한 부조종석의 열기가 한껏 밀려들었다.
